The Natives of Canada Essay -- Canadian Canada History
The Natives of Canada I believe the rising anger and determination by native peoples towards land claims and equal rights has created a situation which must be addressed immediately. Man has come a long way in time, as he has learned to master the powers of fire, and to hunt and fish for food. All of this was done by a collection of knowledge. With these thought patterns, he reached a way of life which was suitable and which created a sense of balance throughout the world's complex ecosystem. But one group of people wanted more. They progressed and educated their minds through time. To some it may be known as plain greed and to others known as common day evolution. To this day the answer remains in the hands of the philosophers. The European continent hosted the group of human beings that thrived for ultimate knowledge and a perfect civilization. The famous quote Trial and Error was appropriate for the European's escalating achievements. Some were fatal and some were rewarding, but they were all eventually accomplished in the great European continent. They then set out to other continents to broaden their horizons and reach total knowledge and enlightenment. The 16th century was the setting for the early days of the arriving Europeans to the North American continent. Countries such as England, Portugal, France and Spain entered the continent and set up colonies which were widely spread out over the land. The natives of the area had formerly agreed upon their occupation of the space, and so welcomed the newly arrived settlers. An agreement was made in the two-row wampum treaty which was signed between the natives and the settlers from Europe in 1664. The agreement would allow... ... laws. Before the arrival of the European's, the natives had a very highly developed society, with a perfect system of government. Now, many centuries later, they see that their common future has been torn to shreds. If the self government proposal was put into effect, a natural resource would be needed for it's survival, and at the present time the reservations do not hold great possibilities. A better location in the reservations could quite possibly open a few new doors to the suffering natives. The current government has constituted the suggestion before, but no actions were ever taken. In conclusion, it is clearly evident that if the natives were ever given more responsibility, which includes a greater authority in the decision making process of Canada, it would most definitely allow them to plan a new and powerful role in Canadian society.

The Princess Bride
The Princess Bride is a 1987 American film, based on the 1973 novel of the same name written by William Goldman, combining comedy, adventure, romance, and fantasy. The film was directed by Rob Reiner from a screenplay by Goldman also the bookââ¬â¢s author. The story is presented in the movie as a book being read by a grandfather to his sick grandson, this technique effectively keeping intact this novel's narrative style. This movie is number 88 on The American Film Institute's (AFI) ââ¬Å"AFI's 100 Yearsâ⬠¦ 100 Passionsâ⬠listing the 100 greatest film love stories of all time. As said the movieââ¬â¢s novel like feels it done by a grandfather reading a book to his grandson, who would rather be playing his video game, then to listen to a story about love. The story takes place in a fictional world of Florin is about a beautiful woman named Buttercup who orders around a farm boy until the day when she realizes, that she loves him. She wants to live happily ever after with him, but then evil forces intervene. Buttercup learns that her one true love Westley her farm boy was killed. Five years later we find Buttercup ready to marry the Evil prince Humperdinck. She is kidnapped by a trio of bandits, who want to start war between Gilda and Florin. The trio is tallied by the Dread Pirate Roberts. Who is there to save the princess, who is this heroic man in black? This movie is witty and sassy without going too far over the top. Reiner manages a task of creating a movie that at the same time parodies a genre while also celebrating and participating in it. Despite the irony and the fantastic setting we come to care about the individuals even the trio of bandits. The instant the princess is kidnapped by agents of the evil Prince Humperdinck reveals itself as a spoof of sword and sorcery movies, yet the film somehow manages to appeal to all viewers. While the younger viewers will sit fascinated by the thrilling action scenes like the sword fight, and the adults, will be laughing with movie at one scene after another. This film is funny not only because they contain comedy, but because Reiner does justice to the underlying form of his story. And those who search films that can be enjoyed by all members of their family this movie is it. All of them will enjoy it family members ranging from grammar school kid, to teenagers, ,mom and dad, and even grandma and grandpa will have a few laughs. There may be nothing better than this motion picture, which celebrates fairy tales and true love. , The Princess Bride can still be enjoyed on the simple level of the story of a princess being rescued by her one true love. The average family film is targeted mainly at children, with a few elements thrown in to go over the young childrenââ¬â¢s heads that appeal to their parents. The crafting of The Princess Bride, however, is far finer. Nearly every aspect of the film delights all possible viewers. For example the sword fight between Inigo and Westly, offers equal thrills to the viewers of all ages even though the verbal banter that accompanies the struggle will resonate more with the older viewers. The choice of actors is only another plus for this movie for this already great movie , Robin Wright and Cary Elwes were selected as much for their good looks as for their acting ability, and they prove that. They have great chemistry that just beams off the screen. Wright, despite being California bred, delivers a perfect British accent. Elwes is equally at home with this comedic, action, and drama role. Mandy Patankin, playing Inigo, matches Elwes' athleticism and develops a character that is instantly sympathetic regardless of originally being a ââ¬Å"bad guyâ⬠. Andre the Giant represents the mighty Fezzik as a lovable giant, and Wallace Shawn is hilarious as the narcissistic Vizzini, whose end is inconceivable. Chris Sarandon takes Humperdinck's arrogance to amazing levels. Since the release from over 20 years ago, The Princess Bride has often been copied, but never equaled. Perhaps the most successful movie to capture its spirit was the animated Shrek. The Princess Bride is an unparalleled achievement ââ¬â a modern classic that will be enjoyed for generations to come. All in all the movie is a brilliant with the acting and comic wit is what makes the movie great. All though the movie is over twenty years old with makes the special effects nothing special. This movie has heart that is scene between Westly and his one true love Buttercup. All of the aspects add up to make one hreafelt comedy that will have you repeating lines in no time. This movie gets an inconceivable 4. 5 out of five stars.

My Job At The Care Home - 1002 Words
The antagonist of all life, death- people quiver at the sight of the word. My job is to let the process of death happen. I come and go into peopleââ¬â¢s lives, most humans canââ¬â¢t even see me, and only the ones near death can. Once you see me, youââ¬â¢re swallowed into the jaws of death. Itââ¬â¢s a miserable job, but someone has to do it. Today is a particularly miserable day because I have to go to a care home the home of the living dead. I had to retrieve a human called Vivian. I looked at her papers. Her life was as intricate as a Michelangelo painting; a life well lived, however every detail beautifully crafted. She had the freedom which I never had and probably never will. I had arrived at the care home. It was decorated; fully in beige it was ironic because the ancient humans were in the beige years of their lives. Their once vivid and radiant lives like the feathers of a peacock had become beige and tedious like the care homes comatose decoration. The ancient humans were just sitting in the waiting room they were like mannequins. The sight was quite institutional and depressing. Vivian was not there I checked into different rooms, however I had finally found her, she was a decrepit woman but she still had some time left. Next to her was Margaret over the years I had seen her quite often. She was vigorous unlike her friend Vivian. The Role of Literacy in Society - 1032 Words
The role of literacy in Society Adult literacy is essential to the economics of modern nations. It is crucial to individuals to have proficient literacy skills to make a difference to their prosperity. In 2003 the National Assessment of Adult Literacy used the following as a definition of literacy: using printed and written information to function in society, to achieve ones goals, and to develop ones knowledge and potential. This definition does not simply mean comprehending text it includes the range of information-processing skills that adults use in home, work and community. Literacy can be subdivided into three different categories: prose literacy, document literacy, and quantitative literacy. Prose literacy is defined asâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The third level requires a person to locate numbers by matching the required information with that given, infer the necessary arithmetic operation and perform arithmetic operations on two or more numbers, or to solve a problem, when the numbers must be located in the text or document. The fourth level requires a person to perform two or more sequential arithmetic operations or a single arithmetic operation, when the quantities could be found in different displays, or when the operations had to be inferred from semantic information given or drawn from prior knowledge. The last level requires a person to perform multiple arithmetic operations sequentially, when the features of the problem had to be extracted from text; or when background knowledge was required to determine the quantities or operations needed. The relationship between economy and literacy is a crucial and well documented relationship. In a Canada study close to 50% of adults with a low literacy lived in low-income households, compared with only 8% of adults with high literacy lived in high-level incomes. This clearly shows what low literacy is capable of doing to the economy of the country. Also during that study it found that the risk of living in aShow MoreRelatedIndigenous Literacies And Aboriginal English1461 Words à |à 6 PagesWhy is it fundamental for a teacher to recognise Indigenous literacies and Aboriginal English in your classroom? Chemotherapy, the 3rd type of intervention, disseminates malignant neoplastic disease killing chemicals throughout the organic structure in order these chemicals kill tumour cells wherever they may be, whether in ample balls or in bantam nests of cells that may be seeable merely by the usage of a microscope ( Laszio, 43 ) . North by Northwest free essay sample
In the film North by Northwest (1959), directed by Alfred Hitchcock, is about a successful new york advertiser is accused of being a government agent by a iniquitous group of spies, who pursue him cross country while he tries to stay alive and clean up the mess thatââ¬â¢s been made. There is a superb use of mise-en-scene within this film, especially the gun shot scene, that catch the viewers attention, and make a much more noteworthy movie. The significance of the gunshot scene in the cafe, at Mt. Rushmore in the film North by Northwest played a crucial role in the remainder of the movie and the events to come. At that point Phillip Vandamm had only one obstacle left in his way when it came to his flee from the country that night, and that was Roger Thornhill. So once Miss Kendall ââ¬Å"shotâ⬠Thornhill, Vandamm didnââ¬â¢t have to worry about any type of exchange for the information, or worry about his plan being exposed. We will write a custom essay sample on North by Northwest or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Also if there were any doubt in Miss Kendallââ¬â¢s loyalty to Vandamm, they were probably gone after she ââ¬Å"shotâ⬠the man who was getting in the middle of everything, especially their lustful relationship. Its one of the more suspenseful scenes in the movie, and very unexpected. So it makes for an attention-grabbing turn of events. It is then apparent, that there was some type of planning before hand involved between Thornhill, the professor, and Miss Kendall, to devise the fake shooting. This scene contributes heavily to the central theme of the film, because it goes to show that Thornhill obviously cares a lot about Miss Kendall, otherwise he wouldnââ¬â¢t be putting himself through this when he wasnââ¬â¢t even guilty in the first place. Miss Kendall acted along with it all and continued the fake act that she didnââ¬â¢t want anything to do with this man (Thornhill), although they both knew how they really felt. The visual and special aspects of the setting are astounding. The entire scene happens within the cafe, which is surrounded by spacious windows, exposing the picturesque landscape of Mt. Rushmore. This indicates that it is a high concept film. There is significance found in each of the characters costumes that identifies their personas as well, acting as symbols and motifs. Roger is always dressed in a nice grey suit, with a white collard shirt, and a tie, with his hair slicked to the side. Representing his businesslike/cunning lifestyle. Eve Kendall is always dressed in a dress and coat of some sort accompanied by heels, with accessories to add, and her hair up in pin curls. Her style of clothing represents her gorgeous looks and manipulating qualities. Miss Kendall is wearing black in this scene, which could very well represent her internal state; disordered and emotionally unstable. There use of balance and symmetry within this scene is very well used. When Miss Kendall pulls her gun, the two of them are perfectly symmetrical in the middle of the frame, which is an open frame, but then they scatter and the placement of the two characters becomes uneven, suggesting chaos and conflict, which is surely the case. The composition of the frame when she shoots the gun, suggest that she has more power over Roger, because she is at the top of the frame, while he is lying at the bottom after being shot. In the studied scene, a couple characters undergo tremendous physical as well as emotional changes to attain a goal. Roger Thornhill fell victim to a shooting in the cafe, in front of a large crowd, that included Vandamm, his posy, the professor, and Miss Kendall. Both of whom are stars on the screen, and act as method actors. From the audiences point of view, it would seem that Mr. Thornhill, went through an emotional change when Miss Kendall was very stand offish and didnââ¬â¢t want anything to do with him talking to her, and then she pulled the gun and the expression on his face clearly showed he was stunned and hurt, yet angry at the same time. Obviously it seemed that he underwent a physical change when he was shot and thought to be dead. For anyone who didnââ¬â¢t know about the plan, it was probably a shocking and horrific event to witness. As far as Miss Kendall is concerned to the observer of it all, she underwent some emotional changes when she shot him, she was dumbfounded and petrified about what she had just done, she stormed out of the cafe crying and screaming! The professor seemed alarmed as well, when he motioned that Thornhill was dead in front of the large crowd gathering around. Vandamm and his partner, were stunned and confused at what had just took place in front of them, you could tell they didnââ¬â¢t exactly know how to react, emotionally detached from it all. The bystanders and surrounding crowd watching the whole thing were clearly afraid and frantic initially after the shots, and quickly gathered around the scene in curiosity and concern for Mr. Thornhill. When the professor tends to Mr. Thornhills care, and looks up at the crowd, you can see grief and disbelief on his face. You could tell by their facial and verbal expression that they were in disbelief. The goal they were trying to obtain was mutual. As far as the professor, Roger, and Miss Kendall were concerned; they were trying to stage the death of Roger, in order to make the escape seem more attainable for Vandamm and his crew. And to make it easier for them in the long run to save Miss Kendall from having to leave with him, and hopefully catching Vandamm red handed in his illegalities against the government. The entire room went silent when Miss Kendall pulled the gun, and everyone just stopped what they were doing and stared. Accompanied by non-diegetic sound, portraying the mood of the devastating and surprising event that just took place. Miss Kendallââ¬â¢s emotional make up somewhat defines the films primary conflict in a way. Her emotions are what started the whole mess anyway, and the underlying plot of hers and Mr. Thornhills romance. She was smitten by Roger Vandamm the first night she saw him at a party, and fell into a relationship with him. It wasnââ¬â¢t until after her emotions were involved that the professor came to her and informed her of the details about Mr. Vandamm and how she could be a very useful tool in their hands. This same emotional attachment was displayed again my Miss Kendall when she met Roger. She was easily swept off her feet by him, and they were very intimate from the beginning of their relationship, leaving feelings on the line and emotions to be dealt with through the entire scandal. This type of emotional attachment develops the underlying plot of the film, when she ends up doing all she can to either help out Roger for his own good, whether he knows it or not, or get back to him. This film employs a somewhat cultural phenomenon to develop the story, boy meets girl, boy and girl fall in love, conflict arises, boy has to chase girl, boy ends up fighting off bad guys to get to the girl, boy ends up with girl in the end, and all is well! With the exception of a few particular turn of events that add to the storyline. This is a very common approach seen in films. We donââ¬â¢t notice it al lot of the time because the events and underlying plots are so different from each other, especially when it comes to the little details, such as actors/actresses, music selection, the type of conflict, location, and everything else that plays into a film. They are all so different! North by Northwest, exhibits the cultural phenomenon of the basic love story. It develops through a series of events through out the film, that leads the viewer to think otherwise, but then events are tied together, to bring the viewer back to the typical love story conclusion. I think the position adopted by this film on this particular cultural phenomenon is that itââ¬â¢s accepted and lifelike. The innocent Roger Thornhill, is taken and accused of being someone he is not, and along the way unknowingly falls in love with a girl that is tied into it all, putting him in the middle of all the chaos, and when he thinks he is finally free, he finds out the truth about his love, and decides he needs to go through with the rest of the plan and try to save her and catch the bad guys. He ends up being the hero, and they so to speak, ââ¬Å"live happily ever afterâ⬠, and justice is served.
